The Brazil Rotary Club was chartered on Dec. 8, 1937 by Rotary International. Prior to that time, a group of local Brazil business men was organized as a Lions Club. However, the group decided to withdraw from Lions in a short time and it operated as an independent club. There were 39 charter members in the club in 1938. Below is the original program from the club’s founding meeting in 1937. The speaker was Sylvester Schiele, one of the original founders of Rotary and it’s first president. Mr. Schiele was born right here in Clay County! In 2005 Schiele was honored with a memorial put near his birth place in Southern Clay County.
